Advanced Diploma in Fashion and Tailoring for the Complete Wardrobe

The School of Sewing, Advanced Diploma, is now available. You need to have taken and passed The Diploma or taken and passed your City & Guilds with the School of Sewing prior to progressing to the Advanced Diploma. The Advanced Diploma is certified by OCN ( Open College Network).

The Advanced Diploma consists of 5 units, spread over the period of 10 months. Each unit must be taken and assessed.

The course will commence in February and completion will be in November. Students will be expected to attend for two consecutive days (Friday & Saturday) approximately once a month. These taught sessions will run from 9.30am to 4.00pm at the School of Sewing. A list of attendance dates can be found later in this document. You will also be expected to work at home on your own, approximately one day a week, between taught sessions  In addition to the taught sessions you will expected to participate in shopping trips and museum visits.

Acceptance onto the course is via the application form and you must have undertaken and passed the Diploma, or City & Guilds. Applicants should submit a completed copy of the application form via email to bookings@schoolofsewing.co.uk before Friday 20 October 2018.

You should also have the following skills and experience:

  • Students must be able to understand fit and have a good knowledge of pattern adjustment;
  • Students must be able to use an intermediate / high level of construction techniques and finishing, including:
    • Understand the difference between straight grain and bias grain and how to use it;
    • Understand the importance of notches and dots;
    • Know what a layplan is and understand how to cut on fold;
    • Be able to thread up and use a sewing machine; and
    • Be able to construct garments to a high standard, including sewing darts and setting sleeves and collars; and
    • Students must be able to read, write and understand and communicate fluent English

A knowledge of pattern drafting is essential.

Your tutor will keep accurate records of your progress, and produce feedback on your work, to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course. Your work will also be assessed by the School of Sewing’s internal assessor. Each unit must be passed before moving on.

There will be a display of your work at the end of the course.

Aims

The aim of the Advanced Diploma is to enable the student to produce a range of garments to a high standard, using more complex techniques that will complement a mix and match ´me made´ wardrobe.

Objectives

  • Each unit will focus on an aspect of sewing.
  • The student will design and draft patterns, where possible.
  • The student will try working with new fabrics and techniques.
  • Each unit must be taken and passed before progressing to the next unit.
  • All students will keep a sewing diary of their work, and a scrap book of ideas.

Cost

The cost of the Advanced Diploma will be £3200.00.

A non refundable deposit of £200 will be due on acceptance onto the course and the balance will be paid via 10 x £300.00 monthly instalments, commencing January 2019. If for any reason you fail to complete the course or dropout, the full fees as stated are still liable.
