Diploma - Fashion and Tailoring for the Complete Wardrobe

The School of Sewing is delighted to offer a certificated Diploma course. The Diploma is certified by OCN ( Open College Network ).

The Diploma consists of 5 units, spread over the period of 12 months. Each unit must be taken and passed before progression to the next unit.

The course will commence in January and completion will be in early December. Students will be expected to attend approximately twice a month on Fridays and the occasional Saturday, but this depends on bank holidays etc. The taught sessions will run from 9.30am to 4.00pm at the School of Sewing, in Ashby de la Zouch. A list of attendance dates can be found later in this document. You will also be expected to work at home on your own, between taught sessions. You should expect to spend approximately one day a week working at home. In addition to the taught sessions you will expected to participate in museum visits if appropriate to the subject area being taught.

You should also have the following skills and experience:

  • Students must be able to understand fit and have a basic knowledge of pattern adjustment.
  • Students must be able to use an intermediate level of construction techniques and finishing, including:
    • Understand what a grainline is and how to use it
    • Understand what a notch is and how to use notches
    • Know what a layplan is and understand how to cut on the fold and on the bias
    • Be able to thread up and use a sewing machine and overlocker
    • Be able to construct garments to a good standard, including sewing darts and setting sleeves and collars; and
  • Students must be able to read, write and understand and communicate fluently in English

A knowledge of pattern drafting is desirable but not essential.

Your tutor will keep accurate records of your progress, and produce feedback on your work, to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course.

Your work will also be assessed by the School of Sewing’s internal assessor. Each unit must be passed before moving on.

There will be a display of your work at the end of the course.

Units

The 5 units that the Diploma consist of are:

  • Unit 1 - Wardrobe planning
  • Unit 2 - Dressmaking
  • Unit 3 - Tailoring
  • Unit 4 - Lingerie
  • Unit 5 - Couture

Aims

The aim of the Diploma is to enable the student to produce a range of garments that mix and match to create a complete wardrobe of clothes. A capsule ‘me made’ wardrobe. To give students the confidence to create their own fashion style.

Cost

The cost of the diploma for 2020 will be £3600.00.

A non refundable deposit of £600 will be due on acceptance onto the course and the balance will be paid via 12 x £250.00 monthly instalments, commencing December 2019. If for any reason you fail to complete the course or dropout, the full fees as stated are still liable.
